The Auditorio de Tenerife in Santa Cruz, with its white curved concrete roof rising above palm trees and flowering shrubs

Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the island's capital and main port, on the north-east coast. It suits city-break travellers, culture lovers, carnival visitors and remote workers who want shops, museums and a tram on the doorstep more than a resort pool. It is about 14.5 km from Tenerife North airport (TFN), typically 14–18 minutes by car, and 64 km from Tenerife South (TFS).

Where to Stay in Santa Cruz de Tenerife: The Capital as a Base

Is Santa Cruz de Tenerife a good place to stay?

Santa Cruz is a good base if you want a real Spanish city with a beach 9 km away, rather than a purpose-built resort.

It is less suited to a pure beach week: Costa Adeje is about 80 km away, typically 57–71 minutes by car. For a greener, quieter northern base, compare Puerto de la Cruz.

What is there to do in Santa Cruz de Tenerife?

Green, jagged peaks of the Anaga mountains in north-east Tenerife, with a winding road and rocks in the Atlantic

Most sights sit within walking distance in the centre, between Plaza de España on the seafront and Parque García Sanabria uphill.

  • Plaza de España: the city's largest square, built in 1929 on the site of the old San Cristóbal castle, whose remains you can see underground.
  • Auditorio de Tenerife Adán Martín: Santiago Calatrava's concert hall by the sea, home of the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra.
  • Mercado de Nuestra Señora de África: the main market for fresh and local produce.
  • TEA and MUNA: contemporary art, including an important Óscar Domínguez collection, and the Museum of Nature and Archaeology, with Guanche finds.
  • Calle del Castillo and La Noria: pedestrian shopping, then bars and restaurants.

The Anaga massif, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2015, begins at the city's edge, with signposted trails such as the PR-TF 2 and PR-TF 8.

Is there a beach in Santa Cruz de Tenerife?

Playa de Las Teresitas seen from above, with golden sand, a curved breakwater, calm water and the village of San Andrés

Yes: Playa de Las Teresitas in San Andrés, about 9 km from the centre (typically 14–18 minutes by car), is the city's beach. It is artificial, opened in 1973 with sand shipped from the Sahara, and is about 1.3 km long and 80 m wide.

A breakwater around 150 m offshore keeps the water calm, which suits families. There are lifeguards, showers, sun loungers, bars and a car park. TITSA city bus 910 runs there from the Intercambiador bus station.

Tenerife North airport is the closest, about 14.5 km away and typically 14–18 minutes by car on the TF-5 motorway. TITSA bus 102 links the airport with the Intercambiador bus station via La Laguna.

Our cars come only with a stay and are collected and returned at TFS or TFN airport, so a Santa Cruz stay pairs well with a TFN pickup.

Can I take the tram to La Laguna?

When is the Tenerife Carnival 2027?

The main street week of the Santa Cruz Carnival 2027 runs from Friday 19 to Sunday 28 February, opening with the announcement parade. The opening gala is on 22 January, the Carnival Queen gala on 17 February, and Carnival Tuesday, 23 February, is a local holiday.
