What is El Médano beach like?

El Médano beach is 750 m long and 43 m wide, with fine grey sand and the red cone of Montaña Roja at its far end. The stretch nearest the town centre has gentler water and suits families, while the far end is where windsurfers and kiters launch and where international competitions, including world championships, have been held.

It has toilets, showers, loungers for hire, step-free access, parking for over 100 cars and restaurants along the promenade.

Two smaller beaches are worth knowing:

  • Playa Chica: a 100 m black-sand beach next to a small fishing harbour, with calm water.
  • La Tejita: about 1,000 m of sand on the other side of Montaña Roja, inside a protected area, reached by a five-minute walk from the parking along the El Médano–Los Abrigos road. It has few services (bins and loungers for hire) and is known as nudist-friendly.

Is El Médano always windy?

Windsurfers with colourful sails riding choppy waves off El Médano

El Médano is windy on most days: Tenerife's official tourism board gives an average of around 300 days of wind a year. The prevailing wind blows from the east and north-east, typically 10–25 knots in winter and 15–30 knots in summer.

That is why kiters come here, but it can mean blowing sand on a lazy beach day. The main kite spot is rated intermediate to advanced, so beginners should learn with a licensed school. For sheltered sunbathing, Costa Adeje on the south-west coast is calmer.

What is the weather like in El Médano?

El Médano has a warm, dry climate: the nearby Tenerife Sur airport weather station records an average daily high of 21.7 °C in January and 28.4 °C in August (AEMET 1981–2010 normals). The same station averages just 15 rain days and 132 mm of rain a year, with about 2,850 hours of sunshine.

Winter works well if you are happy with a breeze.

Can you climb Montaña Roja?

View from the slopes of Montaña Roja over red volcanic ground to the bay and town of El Médano

Yes, a signed trail climbs Montaña Roja, a 171 m volcanic cone at the heart of a 166-hectare Special Nature Reserve. The Granadilla de Abona tourism route is 1.2 km with 144 m of ascent, and you can start from the edge of town, from La Tejita or from the parking on the road to Los Abrigos.

Stay on the marked path: the reserve protects dune habitats and nesting birds such as the Kentish plover. There is no shade, so take water and a hat.

How far is El Médano from Tenerife South airport?

El Médano is about 8.5 km from Tenerife South airport, typically 12–15 minutes by car. TITSA bus line 470 links the airport with El Médano.

From Tenerife North (TFN) it is about 69 km, typically 49–61 minutes.

Do you need a car in El Médano?

You can manage the town itself on foot, but a car makes a big difference for everything else. Beaches, promenade, Montaña Roja and La Tejita are all walkable. For Teide, the west coast or a day in Santa Cruz, a car saves a lot of time over buses. If you bring boards or kite gear, a larger car helps.
