Easter Sunday 2027 falls on 28 March, which makes it an early Easter: Holy Week in Tenerife runs from Palm Sunday, 21 March, and both Holy Thursday (25 March) and Good Friday (26 March) are public holidays across the Canary Islands. At that time of year the south coast averages 23 °C by day with…

When is Easter 2027, and which days are holidays in Tenerife?

Easter Sunday is 28 March 2027, and the Canary Islands government has confirmed Holy Thursday (25 March) and Good Friday (26 March) as regional public holidays. Easter Monday (29 March) is not a public holiday in the Canaries, so shops, offices and services work normally that day, even though it is a bank holiday in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Date (2027)DayStatus in Tenerife
21 MarchPalm SundayNormal Sunday; processions in many towns
25 MarchHoly Thursday (Jueves Santo)Public holiday
26 MarchGood Friday (Viernes Santo)Public holiday; busiest day for processions
27 MarchHoly SaturdayNormal Saturday

Each municipality also sets two local holidays of its own, so check the town you are staying in if you need a particular office or service.

School holidays at Easter 2027

Most schools in England and Wales break up on Friday 26 March and return after Friday 9 April 2027, the pattern followed by 96 of the 146 councils. In Ireland, all primary and post-primary schools close from Monday 22 March to Sunday 4 April 2027 under the Department of Education's standardised calendar.

MarketEaster school holidays 2027
England and Wales (most councils)26 March – 9 April
England and Wales (range across councils)Earliest start 22 March, latest end 18 April
Ireland (all schools)22 March – 4 April
Germany (most Länder)Mostly from 22 March to 2 or 3 April; later in Saarland and Schleswig-Holstein
FranceSpring holidays start after Easter: zone C from 3 April, zone A from 10 April, zone B from 17 April

In practice, 22 March to 4 April is when Spanish Holy Week overlaps with the Easter breaks in the UK, Ireland and most German Länder. If your dates are flexible, from 5 April Irish schools and most German Länder are back, although French zone C families start arriving that weekend.

What is the weather like in Tenerife at Easter?

At the end of March the south coast of Tenerife averages 23.1 °C by day and 15.6 °C at night, with 1.9 rain days and 226 hours of sunshine in the month, according to AEMET's 1981–2010 normals for Tenerife South airport. The north and the mountain are a different story, so it helps to know where your base and your day trips are.

Area (AEMET station)Max / min, March (°C)Rain days, MarchSunshine, March (h)
South coast (Tenerife South airport, 64 m)23.1 / 15.61.9226
Santa Cruz (city, 36 m)22.1 / 15.93.8221
North upland (Tenerife North airport, 632 m, La Laguna)18.2 / 10.76.8188
Teide area (Izaña, 2,369 m)10.2 / 2.74.1–

Rain days count days with at least 1 mm. April is very similar in the south (23.1 °C highs, 1.1 rain days), so a slightly later trip does not change much.

Can you swim at Easter?

You can, but the sea is at its coolest of the year: around 19 °C on average in March off the south coast, with a range of roughly 18–21 °C. Most adults find that fresh but swimmable on a sunny afternoon; young children are usually happier in a pool, and a heated one makes a real difference in the evenings.

What to pack for the processions

Pack a warm layer if you plan to watch processions in La Laguna, which sits at the same altitude band as the north airport, where March nights average 10.7 °C. The dawn procession on Good Friday starts at 4:00, when it is colder still. On Teide, snow falls on an average of 2.1 days in March at Izaña, so check road conditions before driving up.

Which Easter processions are worth seeing in Tenerife?

The most famous is the dawn procession of the Cristo de La Laguna in the early hours of Good Friday, followed by the Magna procession the same afternoon in La Laguna's UNESCO-listed historic centre. La Orotava, Puerto de la Cruz, Santa Cruz, Icod de los Vinos, Adeje and Arona also hold Holy Week events, according to Tenerife's official tourism site.

La OrotavaSolemn processions through the historic centre from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, with sacred music and floral decorations; Holy Thursday night and Good Friday are the key daysPuerto de la Cruz
Adeje (old town)La Pasión de Adeje: a street performance of the Passion by more than 300 local amateur actors, every Good Friday at noon on Calle Grande, about two hoursCosta Adeje and the south-west

Times above come from the 2026 programmes and change slightly each year; the parishes and town halls publish the 2027 programmes in the weeks before Holy Week. Entry to all of them is free, and processions are religious events rather than shows, so keep a respectful distance and avoid flash photography inside the churches.

What is open in Tenerife on Holy Thursday and Good Friday?

In the tourist areas, most shops, supermarkets and restaurants stay open on both holidays, because businesses in Tenerife's high-tourism zones are free to set their own opening days and hours. Outside those zones, Good Friday is the day to plan around.

Based on what the main chains did at Easter 2026:

Shopping centres in tourist areas (for example Siam Mall, Centro Comercial Martiánez in Puerto de la Cruz)Open as normalOpen as normal
MercadonaOpen with reduced hours (9:00–15:00 in 2026)Closed

Our practical advice as local hosts: do a proper food shop on Wednesday 24 March or earlier, especially if you are staying in a residential area outside the resorts. Restaurants in Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos and Puerto de la Cruz open as usual, but in La Laguna and La Orotava they fill up quickly on Holy Thursday night and Good Friday, so book a table.

Where should you stay in Tenerife at Easter?

Houses with tiled roofs, gardens and tall palms in a residential street of Puerto de la Cruz, with apartment blocks and the Atlantic behind

Stay in the south (Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos, Callao Salvaje) if sunshine and the beach come first, and in Puerto de la Cruz or Santa Cruz if the processions are the reason you are going. The island is compact enough to combine both with a car, but the choice of base decides how early you have to get up on Good Friday.

Easter falls within our winter high season (December to April), when minimum stays are longer than in the rest of the year. The exact minimum for your dates is shown on each home when you pick them.

For the processions: Puerto de la Cruz

Puerto de la Cruz is the easiest base for La Orotava, 7.7 km up the hill, and has its own Holy Week processions in the old town. A house with a garden and pool makes a good retreat after a late night at the processions.

For sun and the pool: the south-west

In the south you get the island's most reliable Easter weather, and Adeje's Good Friday Passion is on your doorstep. For larger families, a villa with a private pool avoids the busy hotel pools of a holiday week.

Do you need a car at Easter in Tenerife?

You need a car if you want to combine a sunny southern base with the processions in La Laguna or La Orotava, because public transport runs on holiday timetables on Holy Thursday and Good Friday and the dawn processions start before most services. From Costa Adeje, Santa Cruz is about 80 km by motorway, and La Laguna a little further.

Our own cars are available only together with a stay, with pickup and return at Tenerife South (TFS) or Tenerife North (TFN) airport. A compact SUV is comfortable on the climb to La Laguna and La Orotava and on the Teide roads.

Is Tenerife warm at Easter?

Yes, on the south coast: the average March high at Tenerife South airport is 23.1 °C, with 226 hours of sunshine and 1.9 rain days in the month (AEMET). The north is cooler, with 18.2 °C highs at Tenerife North airport, and nights there drop to around 11 °C.

Are supermarkets open on Good Friday in Tenerife?

In the tourist areas many are, because businesses there can choose their own opening days. Elsewhere most big chains close on Good Friday (at Easter 2026 Mercadona, most HiperDino stores, Lidl and Alcampo did), so shop by Wednesday.
