If you mean the very nearest place to the terminal, that is the fishing village of Los Abrigos, next to the western end of the runway. Aena's noise monitor at its school sits about 900 m from the runway threshold. Los Abrigos is known for harbour-front seafood restaurants, and Golf del Sur is about 4 km, typically 9–11 minutes, from it.

How long is the drive from TFS to each area?

Every area where we manage homes in the south and west is within about 48 minutes of Tenerife South airport, and the six nearest are within half an hour. The table gives road distances and typical car times, which are also the times a taxi will take.

We routed each drive from the airport to the centre of the area with OpenStreetMap data. The lower figure is the free-flow time; the upper one adds about a quarter for normal traffic. The TF-1 motorway around Las Américas and Adeje is the usual slow spot, so allow more at peak times.

Bus lines are those Aena lists for the airport stop on the arrivals floor (floor 0), as of September 2026. For El Médano, line 415 takes you to San Isidro, where you change to line 408. Line 470 links El Médano, Golf del Sur and Los Cristianos along the coast, but it does not call at the airport.

If you are still choosing between the two airports, our guide to Tenerife South vs North airport compares both with the same drive-time data.

Is there aircraft noise near Tenerife South airport?

Yes: El Médano, Golf del Sur and Los Abrigos all hear aircraft, and which of them hears more depends mainly on the wind direction. Aena runs noise monitors in all three, and its 2023 annual report shows the pattern clearly.

TFS has one runway, and planes take off and land into the wind. Because the trade winds blow from the north-east most of the year, the airport used its "east" configuration (runway 07) for about 93 % of its 80,000 aircraft movements in 2023. In that configuration:

  • Departures climb out over the El Médano side of the airport. Aena's monitor at El Médano's secondary school, about 2.1 km from the runway's eastern end, recorded the highest aircraft noise of the three monitors.
  • Arrivals come in from the south-west, past Golf del Sur and Los Abrigos. The monitor on a hotel roof in the Amarilla Golf area of Golf del Sur, about 2.6 km from the runway's western end, recorded lower aircraft levels than El Médano. Los Abrigos recorded the lowest aircraft levels of the three.

On the few days when the wind turns, mostly between November and April, the pattern reverses: take-offs head over the Golf del Sur side and landings come in over El Médano.

Monitor (Aena, 2023)Main aircraft noiseAverage aircraft noise, day (dB)Average aircraft noise, night (dB)
El Médano (secondary school)Take-offs, runway 0760.450.0
Golf del Sur (Amarilla Golf)Landings, runway 0757.645.5
Los Abrigos (school)Landings, runway 0752.942.0

Night flights exist but are few. About 3,000 of the year's movements, under 4 %, fell in the night period (23:00–07:00). Aena's report found that the noise attributed to aircraft stayed within the legal quality targets at all three monitors.

These are single points, so treat them as a guide rather than a verdict on every street. Noise depends on how close you are to the extended runway line, which way the terrace faces and whether you are indoors with the windows shut. If it matters to you, ask us about the position of a specific home before you book, and we will tell you what we know.

Late arrivals and early flights: what to plan for

The key to a smooth late arrival is to have your car and your arrival details sorted before you land. Here is what applies to our stays:

  • Check-in and check-out times. Our homes show their check-in and check-out times on each property page (for most, check-in is from 15:00 and check-out is until 11:00).
  • Arrival details. The address and how you get into your home are confirmed with your booking. If you land late, check the arrangements in your confirmation before you fly, and ask us whether your home has self check-in.
  • Online check-in. Spanish law requires us to register every guest's identity details. You fill these in through an online check-in link after you pay.
  • Car at the terminal. If you add a car, you collect it at Tenerife South (or Tenerife North) airport, which are our only pick-up and return points. Rental days count in 24-hour periods from the time you collect it, so a late pick-up does not waste a day. Your car dates must fall within your stay.
  • Early flights. From El Médano or Golf del Sur you are 12–16 minutes from the terminal, which leaves time to return the car. Do not plan to sleep at the airport: Aena closes the TFS terminal to the public between 23:00 and 04:00 and whenever there are no flights, except for staff and passengers.

Without a car, taxis wait at the official rank outside arrivals. Take one only from the signed rank and ask for a receipt. Fares are metered and regulated, so for a trip this short the meter is the simplest option.

One night near the airport or a whole holiday?

Kitesurfers and walkers on El Médano beach in the late afternoon, with Montaña Roja behind

For a single night before an early flight, a hotel beside the airport is usually the practical choice, because our homes have minimum stays of several nights. For a week or longer, staying 15 minutes from TFS can be the whole point, and self-catering starts to make more sense.

Stay near the airport for the whole holiday if:

  • You travel with young children and want the transfer over before anyone gets tired.
  • You come for kitesurfing, windsurfing or golf, which are on the doorstep in El Médano and Golf del Sur.
  • You want a quieter local base and are happy to drive 20–25 minutes to Los Cristianos or Costa Adeje for a day out.

Choose somewhere further away if:

  • Aircraft noise would spoil your holiday. Los Cristianos, Costa Adeje and La Caleta are away from the flight paths.
  • You want calm, sheltered sand every day. El Médano's beaches are often windy, and Golf del Sur has no sand beach of its own.
  • You plan to go without a car. Los Cristianos has a direct airport bus (line 40) and a walkable town centre and beach.

Our two homes nearest the airport suit different trips. The Arena Roja apartment in El Médano is a one-bedroom place for two, close to the beach and Montaña Roja, with a desk for longer stays.

Villa Nueve Hoyos in Golf del Sur is a single-level, three-bedroom villa with a private pool, close to the golf course and the coastal path towards San Blas.

For a town with a beach and a direct airport bus, 18–23 minutes from TFS, compare Los Cristianos.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the closest resort to Tenerife South airport?

El Médano is the closest by drive time, about 8.5 km and typically 12–15 minutes. Golf del Sur is practically level at about 8 km and 13–16 minutes. The fishing village of Los Abrigos sits right next to the western end of the runway.

What is the nearest town to Tenerife South airport?

The airport is in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona. The nearest villages are Los Abrigos, at the western end of the runway, and El Médano, on the coast to the east. San Isidro, a little inland, is where airport bus 415 ends and you can change to other local lines.

Can you hear planes in Golf del Sur?

Yes, especially arrivals, which pass the resort when the airport uses runway 07, as it did for about 93 % of movements in 2023. Aena's monitor there recorded lower aircraft noise than the one in El Médano. How much you notice depends on the street, so ask about a specific home before you book.

Is El Médano under the flight path?

El Médano is on the departure side when the trade winds blow from the north-east, which is most of the year. Aena's monitor at the town's secondary school recorded the highest aircraft noise of its three monitors around TFS in 2023. Nights are much quieter, with under 4 % of movements between 23:00 and 07:00.

Is there a bus from Tenerife South airport to El Médano or Golf del Sur?

TITSA line 415 runs from the airport to Costa San Miguel in Golf del Sur and on to Las Galletas. There is no direct airport bus to El Médano: take line 415 to San Isidro and change to line 408. Check times on titsa.com before you travel.

Can I stay one night near Tenerife South airport before an early flight?

Yes, several hotels lie within a few kilometres of the airport, some about 1–2 km away, and for one night they are the practical option. Our homes have minimum stays of several nights, shown on each property page. The terminal itself is closed to the public from 23:00 to 04:00 unless there are flights, so do not plan to sleep there.

Can I pick up a hire car at Tenerife South airport with my stay?

Yes. With our stays you collect the car at Tenerife South or Tenerife North airport and return it there, and the car dates must fall within your stay. Rental days are counted in 24-hour periods from pick-up.

Land, collect your car at TFS, and be at your door in about 15 minutes.
