Getting around
Tenerife North or South Airport? TFS vs TFN Compared
Tenerife has two airports: Tenerife South (TFS) serves the sunny resort coast in the south and west, and Tenerife North (TFN) serves Santa Cruz, La Laguna and Puerto de la Cruz. Pick the airport nearest to where you are staying, because the two are about 70 km apart. Below you will find the…

Which airport should I fly into, TFS or TFN?
Fly into Tenerife South (TFS) if you are staying anywhere on the south or west coast, and into Tenerife North (TFN) if you are staying in Santa Cruz, La Laguna or Puerto de la Cruz. For eight of the ten areas where we manage homes, TFS is the closer airport by a wide margin.
| Where you stay | Best airport | Drive from that airport |
|---|---|---|
| Costa Adeje, Playa de las Américas, Los Cristianos | TFS | about 18–20 km, typically 17–23 min |
| La Caleta, Callao Salvaje | TFS | about 23–28 km, typically 23–29 min |
| El Médano, Golf del Sur | TFS | about 8–9 km, typically 12–16 min |
| Los Gigantes | TFS | about 43 km, typically 38–48 min |
| Puerto de la Cruz | TFN | about 27 km, typically 26–33 min |
| Santa Cruz de Tenerife | TFN | about 14.5 km, typically 14–18 min |
Flight choice matters too. Most direct flights from the UK and Ireland land at TFS, so the cheapest or most convenient flight can outweigh a longer transfer, especially if you are picking up a car.
Tenerife South (TFS) at a glance
Tenerife South is the island's main tourist airport: it handled 13.97 million passengers in 2025, about twice Tenerife North's 7.17 million (Aena). It sits at 64 m above sea level in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona, close to the south coast motorway (TF-1).
- Official name: Aeropuerto de Tenerife Sur (Aena). You will still see "Tenerife South–Reina Sofía" in older sources; Queen Sofía inaugurated it.
- Opened: November 1978.
- Runway: one runway, 3,200 m.
- Airlines and markets: the busiest routes are to the UK, led by Manchester, London Gatwick and London Stansted; Ryanair has a base here, and Madrid is the main domestic route.
- Night closure: between 23:00 and 04:00, and when there are no flights, the terminal is open only to staff and passengers (Aena). Do not plan to wait there overnight for an early flight.
Tenerife North (TFN) at a glance

Tenerife North, officially Tenerife Norte–Ciudad de La Laguna, is the smaller airport and the hub for inter-island and mainland Spain flights: it handled 7.17 million passengers in 2025, up 6.1 % on 2024 (Aena). It sits at about 633 m altitude on the La Laguna plateau, around 11 km in a straight line from Santa Cruz.
- Opened: 1946, making it the older of the two.
- Runway: one runway, 3,171 m, almost as long as the one at TFS.
- Airlines and markets: mostly Canary inter-island and mainland Spain flights, plus a smaller number of European routes. Binter, the Canary Islands airline, operates extensively from here.
- Weather: its height puts it in the trade-wind cloud belt, so low cloud and fog are more common than at TFS (see the weather section below).
The airport also carries history: in 1977 two Boeing 747s collided on its runway in fog, the deadliest accident in aviation history. Tenerife South opened the following year, and TFN did not return to international traffic until a new terminal opened in 2002.
TFS vs TFN in one table
Tenerife South is bigger by passengers, lower and sunnier; Tenerife North is closer to the capital and the north coast.

How far is each airport from each area?
Every area in the south and west is within about 48 minutes of TFS, while Puerto de la Cruz and Santa Cruz are within about 33 minutes of TFN. The table gives road distances and typical car times from both airports, so you can also see the cost of landing at the "wrong" one.
| Area | From TFS (km) | From TFS (min) | From TFN (km) | From TFN (min) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| El Médano | 8.5 | 12–15 | 69 | 49–61 |
| Golf del Sur | 8 | 13–16 | 74 | 55–69 |
| Los Cristianos | 18 | 18–23 | 84 | 60–75 |
| Playa de las Américas | 18 | 17–21 | 84 | 59–74 |
| Costa Adeje | 20 | 17–21 | 87 | 59–74 |
| La Caleta | 23 | 23–29 | 89 | 65–81 |
| Callao Salvaje | 28 | 23–29 | 94 | 65–81 |
| Los Gigantes | 43 | 38–48 | 79 | 76–95 |
| Santa Cruz de Tenerife | 64 | 48–60 | 14.5 | 14–18 |
| Puerto de la Cruz | 95 | 70–88 | 27 | 26–33 |
The lower figure is the routed free-flow time; the upper one adds about a quarter for normal traffic. The TF-1 around Las Américas and Adeje and the TF-5 around La Laguna and Santa Cruz are the usual slow spots, so allow more at rush hour.

How do I get from the airport without a car?
Both airports have TITSA buses from the arrivals level and official taxi ranks outside arrivals. As of September 2026, these are the lines Aena lists:
| Airport | Line | Route | Journey and fare |
|---|---|---|---|
| TFS | 40 (Aeroexpress) | Airport – Los Cristianos – Costa Adeje bus station | about 40 min; €3.70 to Costa Adeje |
| TFS | 10 (Aeroexpress) | Airport – San Isidro – Las Caletillas – Santa Cruz | about 50 min, every 30 min |
| TFS | 711 (night) | Santa Cruz – Airport – Los Cristianos – Costa Adeje | night service |
| TFS and TFN | 343 | Puerto de la Cruz – TFN – TFS – Los Cristianos | about 50 min between airports; €9.70 airport to airport |
| TFN | 20 | Airport – La Laguna – Santa Cruz | €2.65 |
| TFN | 30 | Airport – Puerto de la Cruz | €4.75 |
| TFN | 104 | Santa Cruz – Airport – Puerto de la Cruz | via La Laguna and Tacoronte |
Note that line 111, which many older guides still recommend from TFS, stopped calling at the airport in 2022. Fares are those listed by Aena; they are lower if you pay with a TITSA Ten+ card; check timetables on titsa.com before you travel.
Taxis are metered, with fares regulated by the island authorities. Only take one from the signed rank at arrivals, and ask for a receipt. With children, luggage and a villa up a hill, a car or pre-booked transfer is usually simpler than the bus.
Picking up your car at TFS or TFN

If you book a car with your stay, you collect it and return it at Tenerife South or Tenerife North airport; these are our only pick-up points. Cars are rented only together with a stay in one of our homes, from our own fleet, and the rental dates must fall within your stay.
- Choose the airport you land at. Pick-up at TFS suits every south and west area; pick-up at TFN suits Puerto de la Cruz and Santa Cruz.
- Rental days are counted in 24-hour periods from the time you collect the car, so a late-evening pick-up does not cost you a full extra day at the start.
- Handover details (where to meet, what to bring) are confirmed with your booking. Deposit, documents and insurance are explained on each car page.
For a family or a group with suitcases, a seven-seater or an SUV with space for three large bags makes the airport run easier.

Can I fly into one airport and out of the other?

Yes, and it often makes sense on a two-centre trip: TFS and TFN are about 70 km apart, typically 49–61 minutes by motorway via the TF-1 and TF-5. Bus line 343 links the two airports in about 50 minutes, but it runs only a few times a day (four weekday departures in each direction when we checked in September 2026), so check times before booking a tight connection.
Open-jaw trips work well if you split your stay between a south-coast villa and Puerto de la Cruz or Santa Cruz. If you have a car, choose your pick-up and return airports when you book.
Weather and delays: is Tenerife North foggy?

Yes, Tenerife North is noticeably cloudier and wetter than the south: AEMET's 1981–2010 averages record about 64 days of rain a year at TFN against about 15 at TFS. TFN's station sits at 632 m, where the north-east trade winds pile up cloud against the hills, so low cloud and fog are more frequent there.
In practice, most flights operate normally at both airports. When visibility at TFN is poor, flights can be delayed. If you are flying to the north in winter, leave a buffer before onward plans such as a ferry or an inter-island connection.
The weather at TFN is not the weather of the north coast. Puerto de la Cruz sits near sea level, about 600 m lower than the airport, and is generally warmer than the plateau around it.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
Which Tenerife airport is bigger?
Tenerife South is bigger by traffic: 13.97 million passengers in 2025 against 7.17 million at Tenerife North (Aena). Their runways are almost the same length, 3,200 m at TFS and 3,171 m at TFN. TFS handles most international holiday flights, TFN most inter-island and mainland Spain flights.
Is Tenerife North airport dangerous?
No. It is a busy Aena airport that handled over 7 million passengers in 2025. Its reputation comes from the 1977 runway collision in fog. Fog and low cloud can still cause delays at times, which is an operational nuisance rather than a reason to avoid it.
What are the official names and codes of the Tenerife airports?
Tenerife South is "Tenerife Sur" (IATA code TFS), sometimes still called Tenerife South–Reina Sofía. Tenerife North is "Tenerife Norte–Ciudad de La Laguna" (IATA code TFN). Aena, the Spanish airport operator, runs both.
Which airport is closer to Costa Adeje?
Tenerife South, at about 20 km and typically 17–21 minutes by car. From Tenerife North it is about 87 km, typically an hour or more. Aeroexpress bus 40 runs from TFS to Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje in about 40 minutes.
Which airport is closer to Puerto de la Cruz?
Tenerife North, at about 27 km and typically 26–33 minutes by car. Bus 30 runs directly from TFN to Puerto de la Cruz. From TFS the drive is about 95 km, typically 70–88 minutes.
Is there a bus between Tenerife South and Tenerife North airport?
Yes, TITSA line 343 connects the two airports in about 50 minutes, for €9.70 (fare listed by Aena, September 2026). It has only a few departures a day, so check the timetable on titsa.com first.
Which airport is closer to Santa Cruz de Tenerife?
Tenerife North, at about 14.5 km by road, typically 14–18 minutes outside rush hour. Bus 20 links TFN with La Laguna and Santa Cruz. From TFS, Aeroexpress 10 takes about 50 minutes to Santa Cruz.
