Where to Stay in Tenerife: 10 Areas Compared

For most first-time visitors, the south-west coast between Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje is the best base: it is about 18–20 km (roughly 17–25 minutes) from Tenerife South airport and gets the most reliable sunshine. The north suits you better if you want greenery, walking and a Spanish town…

Drive times are free-flow estimates from the area centre, routed on OpenStreetMap data in September 2026. In daytime traffic, allow about 25% longer. "Nightlife" and "Car needed?" are our editorial judgement, not measured data. Live prices for each area are on the area pages linked below.

North or south?

Stay in the south if sunshine is your priority: the Tenerife South airport weather station records only 15.2 rain days a year, against 64 at Tenerife North airport (AEMET normals, 1981–2010). The north-east trade winds push cloud against the northern slopes, and the island's high centre around Teide keeps much of it away from the south and south-west coasts.

The contrast is sharpest in winter. In December, Tenerife South airport averages daytime highs of 22.8 °C with 3.5 rain days. Santa Cruz, on the north-east coast at 36 m, averages 22.1 °C and 5.4 rain days. Tenerife North airport, at 632 m, averages only 17.1 °C and 8.8 rain days, but it sits on a plateau and is cloudier than the northern coast; AEMET publishes no official normals for Puerto de la Cruz itself.

Up at Izaña (2,369 m), near Teide, December highs average just 8.8 °C, so pack a warm layer for a day in the national park.

The 10 areas

Costa Adeje

Costa Adeje is the most polished stretch of the south-west coast, running from Playa de Troya to Callao Salvaje. A promenade links a string of pale-sand beaches, including Playa del Duque (390 m, Blue Flag) and Fañabé (600 m, Blue Flag), with sunbed hire and showers. Siam Park is within the resort. It suits families and couples who want everything within walking distance, and villa guests on the slopes above. You can manage without a car on the seafront; villas higher up need one.

Playa de las Américas

Playa de las Américas is one of the liveliest resorts on the island, about 18 km from Tenerife South. The Troya beaches (Blue Flag) sit on its border with Costa Adeje, and the resort hosts the Las Américas Pro surf event. The Veronicas strip on the seafront is the south's best-known late-night bar and club area. It works well without a car and for groups.

Los Cristianos

Los Cristianos is a harbour town whose beach was one of the first on Tenerife to welcome tourists, in the 1960s. Playa de Los Cristianos has calm water and golden sand, and next door Playa de Las Vistas is 850 m long with disabled access. Ferries leave the harbour for La Gomera, a crossing of about 50 minutes with Fred. Olsen. It is our first pick for families, older couples and long stays without a car.

La Caleta

La Caleta is a former fishing village at the northern end of Costa Adeje, with a seafront lined with fish restaurants. The rocky bathing area is popular with snorkellers, and the wild, undeveloped Playa Diego Hernández is nearby. It suits couples and food lovers who want Costa Adeje's beaches nearby but a quieter base.

Area

La Caleta

1 stay · from €200 per night

Callao Salvaje

Callao Salvaje is a small, mostly residential area at the north-western end of Costa Adeje, about 28 km from Tenerife South. Its beach, Playa de Ajabo, is a 100 m cove of pebbles, shingle and grey sand with sunbeds and a beach bar. Choose it for quiet and space; you will want a car for shopping, bigger beaches and day trips.

Golf del Sur

Golf del Sur is a purpose-built resort in San Miguel de Abona, built around two courses: Golf del Sur and Amarilla Golf. At about 8 km from Tenerife South, it is one of the two closest areas to the airport, which is handy for early flights. The coast is rocky, so plan to drive to a sand beach.

El Médano

El Médano is a relaxed town in Granadilla de Abona, about 9 km from Tenerife South, with a beach famous for kitesurfing and windsurfing. Its grey-sand beach has gentler water near the town and has hosted world windsurfing and kitesurfing championships further out. La Tejita, over 1 km of black sand beside the 171 m Montaña Roja nature reserve, is next door.

Los Gigantes

Los Gigantes is a small west-coast resort in Santiago del Teide, beneath sea cliffs that rise to about 600 m. Boat trips leave from the marina, and black-sand Playa de la Arena is in neighbouring Puerto de Santiago. It is the closest of our areas to Masca and the Teno mountains, and a scenic, quieter base for couples and walkers.

Puerto de la Cruz

Puerto de la Cruz is the north coast's historic resort town, 27 km from Tenerife North and the closest of our areas to Teide (41 km). Instead of a big sandy beach, it has the Lago Martiánez seawater pools designed by César Manrique and the black-sand Playa Jardín. It suits walkers, winterers and anyone who prefers a real town with a Spanish rhythm.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Santa Cruz is the island capital, 15 km from Tenerife North airport. Its main beach, Las Teresitas in San Andrés, is golden sand behind a breakwater, about 9 km from the centre. It is the base for carnival, museums, shopping and restaurants, and you do not need a car within the city.

Best area by traveller type

Families

Choose Los Cristianos or Costa Adeje: both have calm beaches with facilities, flat promenades and short airport transfers. A villa with a pool above Costa Adeje gives you space, but plan on a car.

Couples

La Caleta offers seafront dining and quiet coves, Los Gigantes has cliff views and sunsets over the sea, and Callao Salvaje gives you the most privacy.

Seeing the whole island

Tenerife is compact: the two airports are about 70 km apart, roughly 50 minutes by motorway. From the south-west coast, Teide's cable car is about 50 minutes' drive; from Puerto de la Cruz it is the closest of our areas. Any base works if you hire a car.

Best area by month

Head south in winter. Tenerife South's daytime highs stay between 21.7 °C (January) and 24.8 °C (November), with fewer than four rain days in any month (AEMET, 1981–2010).

  • November to March (winter sun): south and south-west coast. Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos and Playa de las Américas are the safest bets for sunbathing.
  • July and August (summer): everywhere is warm. Tenerife South averages 28.4 °C in August and Santa Cruz 29.0 °C; the north coast feels fresher, which suits walkers.
  • Carnival (February): stay in or near Santa Cruz. The 2027 main week runs from 19 to 28 February, with Carnival Tuesday on 23 February, which overlaps many English schools' February half-term. Book early and expect street noise until late.

Where to avoid?

No area is one to avoid, but each has trade-offs you should know before booking.

  • Next to the Veronicas strip (Playa de las Américas): loud until the early hours. Great if you are there for the nightlife, poor if you have young children.
  • Golf del Sur: it sits about 8 km from Tenerife South and near its flight paths, so some streets hear aircraft. Ask about the exact location of the property.
  • El Médano: the wind that makes it a kitesurf hub can make a lazy beach day uncomfortable.
  • Los Gigantes: the resort is hilly, with steep streets and steps, which is hard work with a pushchair or limited mobility.
  • Santa Cruz at carnival: fantastic atmosphere, but crowds and music late into the night.

Getting around: car or bus?

The road through Teide National Park with the summit of Mount Teide rising ahead between volcanic rock walls

You can manage without a car in Los Cristianos, Playa de las Américas and Santa Cruz; in Callao Salvaje, Golf del Sur and Los Gigantes a car is effectively necessary. TITSA buses cover the main routes. Line 111 links Santa Cruz, Tenerife South airport, Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje. Line 343 runs from Puerto de la Cruz via both airports to Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje, but with only a few departures a day and a journey of almost two hours end to end.

A car makes day trips to Teide, Masca, Anaga and the north coast straightforward. If you book a stay with us, you can add one of our own cars and collect it at Tenerife South or Tenerife North airport.

Frequently asked questions

Is it better to stay in the north or south of Tenerife?

For sun, stay in the south: Tenerife South airport records about 15 rain days a year, against 64 at Tenerife North (AEMET, 1981–2010). The north is greener, cooler and closer to Teide, and better if you plan to hike or prefer a Spanish town to a resort.

Where is the best place to stay in Tenerife without a car?

Los Cristianos and Playa de las Américas are the easiest: beaches, shops and restaurants are walkable, and bus 111 connects them with Tenerife South airport. Santa Cruz also works well, as long as you want a city rather than a beach resort.

Where is warmest in Tenerife in December?

The south coast. Tenerife South airport averages daytime highs of 22.8 °C in December, compared with 22.1 °C in Santa Cruz and 17.1 °C at Tenerife North airport (AEMET, 1981–2010).

What is the best area in Tenerife for families?

Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje. Both have calm beaches with facilities, flat seafront promenades and short transfers from Tenerife South (about 18–20 km). Costa Adeje also has Siam Park within the resort.

Is Costa Adeje expensive?

It is the most upmarket part of the south coast, with luxury hotels around Playa del Duque, so accommodation and dining tend to cost more than in Los Cristianos or El Médano. Villas and apartments vary widely; check the live prices on our Costa Adeje page for your dates.

Where should first-time visitors stay in Tenerife?

Costa Adeje or Los Cristianos. They combine the sunniest coast, easy beaches and a short hop from Tenerife South, and Teide is about 50 minutes away by car for a day trip.

Where should I avoid staying in Tenerife?

It depends on what you want. Avoid streets next to the Veronicas strip if you need quiet, Golf del Sur if aircraft noise bothers you, El Médano if you dislike wind, and Los Gigantes if steep streets are a problem.
