Tenerife Villas with No Car Needed: an Honest Guide

You can have a car-free holiday in Tenerife if you stay in Los Cristianos, Playa de las Américas, Santa Cruz or Puerto de la Cruz, where beaches, shops and bus stations are in town. Most villas with a private pool are a different story: they sit on quiet hillsides or in residential estates, and…

Which areas of Tenerife work without a car?

Four areas work well without a car: Los Cristianos, Playa de las Américas, Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Puerto de la Cruz. Each has a seafront or town centre you can walk, supermarkets in the streets behind it, and direct TITSA buses to at least one airport.

Drive times are free-flow estimates from each area centre (OpenStreetMap routing, September 2026). Bus lines are those listed by TITSA and the airport operator Aena as of September 2026.

Los Cristianos is our first pick without a car. It has a sheltered town beach, ferries to La Gomera from the harbour, and it sits on the bus corridor between the airport and Costa Adeje. Playa de las Américas joins it along the seafront, so the two work as one long walkable strip.

In the north, Santa Cruz is a real city: the tram (Line 1, 12.5 km, 21 stops) runs from the bus interchange up to La Laguna. Puerto de la Cruz is compact and flat along the seafront, and line 102 links it with La Laguna and Santa Cruz.

Our homes rated: which can you enjoy without a car?

Three of our six homes in this guide are easy without a car, and all three are apartments; our villas with a private pool all need one. We have not yet published measured walking minutes for each home, so the table below rates each one by its location, not by a stopwatch.

The Cardón apartment in Los Cristianos has two bedrooms, a shared pool and a baby cot on request, which makes it the easiest choice for a family without a car.

The Oleaje apartment is on an upper floor near the Playa de las Américas promenade, with floor-to-ceiling windows facing the sea. Boat trips leave from the nearby harbours.

The Tranvía Centro apartment in central Santa Cruz has a desk corner and suits longer city stays; the tram to La Laguna starts in the city.

If you are searching for a "villa with private pool, no car needed", our honest answer is that we do not have one in our current portfolio. The trade-off is simple: a private pool needs space, and space in south Tenerife is on the hillsides and in the estates, not on the promenade.

Which villas really need a car, and why are they still worth it?

Villa Solanera, Villa Lava y Sal and Villa Nueve Hoyos all need a car, because the beach, supermarket and restaurants are a drive away rather than a walk. What you get in return is a private pool, more space and quiet evenings.

  • Villa Solanera (four bedrooms, heated infinity pool, sea views towards La Gomera) is on the residential slopes above Costa Adeje. Playa del Duque and the promenade are a short drive down; walking back up the hill is hard work in the midday sun.
  • Villa Lava y Sal (four bedrooms, private pool and garden) is in Callao Salvaje, a quiet village 27.7 km (about 23 minutes) from Tenerife South airport. You can reach the small local beach and a few restaurants, but bigger shops and the Costa Adeje beaches are a drive.
  • Villa Nueve Hoyos (three bedrooms, private pool) is in the Golf del Sur estate, only 7.9 km (about 13 minutes) from Tenerife South. The coastal path towards San Blas starts nearby, and the seafood restaurants of Los Abrigos are a short drive.

A car also opens up the island. The TITSA bus to Teide (line 342) runs once a day from Costa Adeje and Los Cristianos and takes about two hours each way. By car from the south-west resorts, the cable car base is about 50 km and 53 minutes away, and you choose when to leave.

Can you rent a car for only part of your stay?

Red hatchback and parked cars on a palm-lined street in Puerto de la Cruz, with Mount Teide in the distance

Yes, in our booking flow you choose the car's pickup and return times within your stay dates, so the car does not have to cover every night. Our cars are rented only together with a stay, and pickup and return are only at Tenerife South (TFS) or Tenerife North (TFN) airport.

Because the car starts and ends at an airport, two patterns work best:

  1. Car first, then car-free. Pick up the car when you land, use it for the supermarket run and the days out, then return it at the airport and come back by bus or taxi.
  2. Car-free first, car at the end. Arrive by taxi or bus, spend the first days on the beach, then collect the car at the airport and drop it off when you fly home.

For couples and small families, a five-door compact such as the Volkswagen Polo covers supermarket runs and day trips. The current price per day appears in the card below.

How much do buses and taxis cost from the airports?

A TITSA bus from Tenerife South to Los Cristianos, Playa de las Américas or Costa Adeje costs about €3.20–3.70 one way, and a taxi about €25–36, as of September 2026. From Tenerife North, the bus to Santa Cruz costs €2.65.

Bus fares come from Aena and travel guides and were checked in September 2026; published figures differ slightly between sources, so treat them as a guide. Line 40 runs about every 30 minutes by day, with the first departure towards the airport at 05:30 and the last at 21:40. Line 343 has only four departures a day in each direction, so check the timetable before you fly.

Taxi fares in Tenerife are metered, with an airport supplement and a higher night and holiday rate. For a family with luggage, a taxi straight to the door is often worth the extra on arrival day; for one or two people with light bags, the bus is hard to beat.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can I stay in a Tenerife villa without a car?

You can, but only if the villa is within walking distance of shops and a beach, which is rare for villas with a private pool. In our portfolio, the homes that work without a car are apartments in Los Cristianos, Playa de las Américas and Santa Cruz. Our villas are in quieter areas where a car is needed.

Where is the best place to stay in Tenerife without a car?

Los Cristianos is the easiest base in the south: it has a town beach, a harbour and direct buses to Tenerife South airport and Costa Adeje. In the north, Santa Cruz and Puerto de la Cruz both have town centres you can walk and good bus links. Our where to stay in Tenerife guide compares all 10 areas.

Is there a bus from Tenerife South airport to Los Cristianos?

Yes. TITSA line 40 runs from the terminal to Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje about every 30 minutes by day, and night line 711 covers the late hours. The fare was about €3.20–3.70 one way in September 2026.

How much is a taxi from Tenerife South airport to Los Cristianos?

Expect roughly €25–36 as of September 2026. Taxis are metered, and an airport supplement and a higher rate at night and on holidays can push the fare to the top of that range.

Can I rent a car for just a few days of my stay?

Yes. When you add one of our cars to your stay, you choose pickup and return times within your stay dates. Pickup and return are only at Tenerife South or Tenerife North airport, so plan one leg of the airport trip by bus or taxi.

Can I get to Mount Teide without a car?

Yes, by TITSA line 342, which leaves Costa Adeje bus station once a day at 09:25 and returns from El Portillo at 15:15. The trip takes about two hours each way, so a guided tour or a car is more flexible.

Do I need a car in Santa Cruz de Tenerife?

Not in the city. The centre is walkable, the tram runs to La Laguna, and line 20 connects the city with Tenerife North airport. You will want a car or a bus for beaches such as Las Teresitas and for trips into the Anaga hills.

Staying in town and keeping the car for only the days you need it is the simplest way to plan a car-free Tenerife holiday.
